Part 3

On hot summer days, after working in the Aviary or the garden, Dad would take us to the corner store. Once there he would buy us cowtails, a glass bottled coke, and a pouch of salted peanuts. We would empty the peanuts into our ice cold cokes. They were so good! All day we would just think about getting to go and get our coke…

Memories are funny things. I wonder why we remember some very insignificant ones and forget some big ones? I grew up on a chicken farm, so I remember feeding the chickens twice a day and gathering eggs in the evening. Then we had to grade the eggs. I hated it at the time, but now I realize that was the time I spent with my brother. We would sing silly songs and play little games to make the time go faster when we were grading eggs. I have a huge appreciation for anyone who raises any kind of birds! Chickens aren't very smart! Strange fact....even though we shipped most of the chickens off each summer, we kept a few to kill and eat. I've helped kill them and pluck them and clean them, but I never helped cut up the pieces for freezing. Consequently, even today if I were to buy a whole chicken and try to cup it up, there would be a mess! But I remember riding the route with my dad and getting to buy a coke and crackers at one of the stores. Now that was a treat. Also, when I was a teenager, gas was 25 to 50 cents a gallon!
